Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, former External Affairs Minister and a foreign affairs expert speaks with Gbenga Oshinaike on recent developments in the country and sounds a note of warning. ISRAELI POLITICS WON’T CHANGE FUNDAMENTALLY IN POST-SHARON ERA, SAYS AKINYEMI Bolaji Akinyemi, former Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister and a Professor of Political Science is not new to the subject of Arab-Israeli relations and the wider Middle East question. He was at a time a member of the UN Group of experts on certain aspects of the Middle East. OMIT RELIGION, ETHNIC AFFILIATIONS FROM CENSUS DATA-AKINYEMI: Professor bolaji akinyemi, former minister of external affairs, ex-director general of the Nigeria institute of international affairs (NIIA) and the maiden national secretary of national democratic coalition (NADECO), disagrees with the agitation in some quarters for the inclusion of religious and ethnic affiliations in the forthcoming national population census data. Akinyemi, a former university don, also advocates the adoption of modified open ballot system for the 2007 polls if the country really wants to conduct a credible, free and fair poll similar to the 1993 election. Moreover, he dismisses the growing clamour for rotational presidency or power shift ahead of the 2007 elections as undemocratic, in this interview with Temitope Ogunbanke and Mojisola Alausa in lagos. Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, 62, former External Affairs Minister and a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) is a respected voice in matters of diplomacy across the globe. Charles Taylor who has been on exile in Nigeria suddenly disappeared, a few days after the Presidency terminated his asylum and asked the Liberian government to take possession of the ex-warlord.
